Public Transportation Management System

Initially required under the Intermodal SurfaceTransportation Equity Act, with the advent of Transportation Equity Act of the 21 st Century (TEA-21), the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has continued to encourage states to maintain PTMSs as part of statewide intermodal planning efforts to ensure more effective investment planning and utilization of State transportation resources. In response, ADOT developed a process that includes FTA funded assets in urbanized and rural areas in Arizona. As an outgrowth of PTMS development, ADOT has instituted an enhanced vehicle inventory database system known as TAPS - Transit Automated Program System. This innovative system facilitates vehicle tracking, business applications and improved customer service.

Asset Management - TAPS

TAPS, Transit Automated Programs Systems, is a database used for supporting business applications within the Section 5310 & 5311 Federal Transit Administration Grant programs. Functions of TAPS include:

• Provider Contact Information
• Vehicle Inspection Reports
• Vehicle Lien Information
• Budget and Funding Allocation

Benefits of TAPS

Asset management programs are vital to public agencies to provide more thorough accounting of its assets. More important is the advantage that expanded asset management affords in making better decisions about capital needs. Involved stakeholders will greatly benefit by this important added value. TAPS greatly enhance these business applications by providing a systematic approach of collecting and interpreting data thereby providing funding recipients with accurate and fair evaluations of their asset management. The method in which transit systems make capital and operating decisions in light of limited resources are a significant part of how asset management systems such as TAPS will assist ADOT and local transit operators in the future.
